My social justice issue is researching to see if elementary schools are educating students and school workers about bullying. The point is to see if elementary schools are teaching the people on how to prevent and report/stop bullying.
My personal experience with this issue has affected me my whole life. I was bullied in fourth grade by two girls because of the effects of my stroke. The thing that connects the most with my research is that when my mom told my teacher and the teachers didn’t really do anything until the end of the year when she talked to the principal about the two girls. If my teacher was more educated on bullying and how to handle it, the bullying could have stopped and not kept going on the whole year.
My assumptions with this research could be that all teachers don’t do enough to prevent or stop bullying and education their students about bullying. Even though I’m sure that some teachers do their best and have lessons about bullying and what to do when you are bullied or see bullying.
I’ll definitely be getting most of my research from reliable websites, maybe books, and social media, but mostly websites.

While researching my issue, I came across this awesome website that goes along perfectly with my issue. The first sentence, illustrates that classrooms need to teach more about bullying. Pacer’s provide free lesson plans and games that talk about bullying. Their main focus is to teach kids to “be a kid against bullying”. I think this is a great phrase because kids need to learn to stand up for themselves and remember that it’s not okay to be bullied. This website shows exactly what one of my main focuses on wanting teachers to teach about bullying, and this offers great help for teachers to do that exact thing.

Bullying
Causes (The Bully)
|
Effects (the person being bullied)
|
When schools are teaching about bullying they need to be teaching the causes of bullying. A lot of bullies have been bullied in the past so one thing schools can teach children is to get help when you are being bullied and to report it. Sometimes bullies can lack self-confidence so they look for somebody “different” or “weaker” than them. Schools also need to teach that it’s okay to be different and that everyone is different in their own way, and to respect those differences.

This picture is from history, the segregation was bullying towards colored people. Bullying is “behavior by one person that intimidates another” (Lee). The colored people were very intimidated by the actions of some white people. This picture shows one instant of how colored people were bullied.

One thing I feel like I could improve on, is expanding my writing. When I have writing assignments in my classes, I tend to finish what I want to say, but to be short of the required word count. http://www.aliventures.com/too-short-writing/ This website gave me some tips and things to do when you need to expand your writing. One thing it recommended was to add USEFUL examples to your points or thoughts. The websites adds to explain those examples so that the reader knows what you’re talking about. Next time I am having trouble with expanding an essay I am going to explain more in-depth my examples, so that I’m not just making a list of examples.

First bully- Jane
Second bully-Jill
Both bullies- black
-Haha, look at that girl
-She’s all alone, she looks different
-She talks funny, I wonder why…
-She probably has something wrong with her.
- I bet that’s why she doesn't talk a lot.
-Hahaha, (laughing and pointing)
-Did you see that she couldn't jump rope?
-Haha ya, I was laughing so hard!
-Maybe she should learn how to, haha
-Ya she should, everyone can jump rope.

Mean by Taylor Swift
- In this song Swift explains that the person the song is about has knocked her off of her feet. She also says their words are like knives. She knows her flaws but the person points everyone of them out to her. The whole song just explains everything this person has done to her and what it’s like and how “Mean” they are.
- In this song Gomez explains how this person made her feel insecure and say she wasn’t good enough. In the song she stands up for herself by saying that she likes how she is. The chorus talks about who would say the things that this person said, like you're not worth it or not beautiful, etc.
- In this song Frazier begins by saying “ you say I’m fat, I’m too skinny, I’m not cool”. I think this really sets the mood for the rest of the song because she then explains why would somebody want to make you cry and laugh at you. This song is sad in that sense that it is real and raw, like really who would do that to somebody.
- This song, goes from the other point of view by talking to the victim saying “you with the sad eyes don’t be discourage”. It just talks about how in today's world it can be hard to have courage. In a way this song can bring victim up and give them courage to keep going.
- This song talks about how sometimes you just want to start again and how you have sparks and you just need to ignite. This song doesn't specifically talk about bully but how you can sometimes feel “like a plastic bag in the air wanting to start over”. When you are bullied you can feel this way because you can feel like the bully is doing this stuff to you and it’s your fault.
- This song’s chorus says it all “what doesn't kill you make you stronger”. You can come out of bullying being stronger, even when it’s hard and feels impossible. Even when you are lonely and hurting from bullying you can “stand a little taller”. The whole song talks about keeping your head up and becoming stronger.

Civil engagements is working together as a community to improve and develop new knowledge. There are many programs and things that are making a positive difference in every community.
Positive: Advice, suggestions, ways to make it flow better, confidence.
Negative: Everyone not working together, somebody giving negative hurtful feedback.
Working in groups in my own level of civic engagement can bring us together, but also tear us down. Depending on what the situation is, it could be both positive and negative, people can be blaming each other.

Notebook Reflection
- With the notebooks I have looked differently at my issue. I have found different resources that I would not have had without the notebooks.
- The notebook I thought was the most fun, was my first one because it was fun finding pictures to go along with my issue.
- My favorite notebook entry is probably the one with different words and their definitions.
- In other writing circumstances I might use the notebook that I wrote a little biography that I then had to write shorter and shorter. I think this because sometimes in writing you have to expand or shorten your thoughts.
- 1. The definitions. 2. My bullying cycle. 3. My list of causes and effects. These notebooks are ones I would most likely use in the future or add them into my writing assignments.
Assignments
Flash Memoir
It all started nineteen years ago. I had a prenatal stroke, which caused severe weakness on my right side, difficulty speaking, and many other challenges. Fast forward nine years, when the bullying started. I was in fourth grade, when two girls started making fun of my physical weaknesses, let’s call these girls Diane and Brady.
“At “wecess” let’s play hopscotch”, I would say to a friend. Diane would mock me and say “wecess” over and over. Brady and Diane would laugh and repeat words that I had trouble saying. “Hey Amanda, why do you walk like that?” asked Diane or Brady. Then they would drag their right foot and laugh at me.
“Why is your arm bent Amanda, why is your hand in a fist?’ The girls would ask, and then they would bend their arm and copy me.
Conversations like this happened in class and at recess and other school activities, like field trips. Even when we would have computer class they would type one handed like me and smirk.
It happened pretty much every day my fourth-grade year. I felt embarrassed, and I felt shy and insecure. I wouldn’t tell my mom much, because I knew she would go to my teacher, then they would get in trouble, and that would make it worse.
Even eight years later, I had a hard time being around Brady. She was in one of my classes in High School and the first day, I saw her and just had flashbacks to what she had done to me in fourth grade. I was even going to transfer classes because it was so hard to be close to her, but then she switched classes for some reasons. On the other hand, Diane mumbled something about “being sorry for what she had done”, and after that, we would say hi sometimes or smile at each other in the halls.
Are elementary schools doing enough to recognize and prevent bullying? PACERS offers great activities and lesson plans talking about bullying. I wish my teacher in fourth-grade would have used these tools and sources to teach the class about bullying. To this day, I’m still really self-conscious of people looking at me. I have a challenging time doing presentations in front of the class because of my speech and posture, even though years of speech/physical therapy have really helped. I am also really anxious when I’m in public settings.
This is why I take online college classes.

Goals and Choices:
- In the piece I’m trying to accomplish the fact that this issue has affected me in the past, and is still affecting me to this day, years later. I am also trying to make the reader feel apart of the story. Another goal I had was making other aware of how bullying can affect people for their whole life and that teachers could potentially help reduce the amount of bullying, starting in elementary school.
- With still making this piece, connect with my issue I added the strategies that flash memoir’s have, like making it interesting and having dialogue. These strategies I used can help the readers feel like they are in the story, witnessing the experience I am sharing. With the specific story I tell, it shows that elementary schools aren't necessarily teaching about bullying. My story shows exactly this as I don’t have any memory of having lessons about bullying until middle school and higher.
- At the very beginning, when I was reading the instructions for this assignment, I immediately thought of this experience. I will say that my first draft was probably too much of just telling, so for my second draft I tried to make it more like the reader is in the story watching, almost like a movie. However I still feel like it could use some more of that feeling. With doing the editing in the second draft I feel that I made it stronger as a piece, the last sentence really show that this experience is still effecting me in school as I take online courses.
Profile
Goals and Choices:
- With this profile, I’m trying to get the point across that even those that are now famous have gone through rough patches. I picked Sandra Bullock because she is a person that a lot of people know and she connects to my issue, bullying. I picked a famous person to try and help those reading it understand that they can get through this.
- One choice I made for this assignment was choosing the powerpoint format because I feel that it makes the point clear. It also could be used as a lesson that you go through the slides and teach about bullying and Bullock’s experience. Another reason I went with this format is that in the past I personally have learned better if I’m seeing something more visual, like a powerpoint, rather than reading an essay or chapter on a certain subject.
- I didn't want to just skip over and tell Sandra’s story I wanted to first give some background on her and her personal life. Second I wanted to tell her story and how she connects to my issue. Third I wanted to show how she dealt with the bullying and how she got through it. Lastly, I wanted to show her accomplishments of everything she has done, to show that life goes on and that you can get through bullying. I feel like with my final editing I succeeded with what I wanted to show, to give people an understanding that you can do anything, regardless of the way people have treated you. You shouldn't limit yourself and think you can’t be successful because somebody is telling you that you can’t do it.
The Information Effect Project
information_project.pptx | |
File Size: | 5430 kb |
File Type: | pptx |
Goals and Choices:
- With this piece I’m trying to give information on bullying that can hopefully be helpful to schools, in knowing what they need to teach and some things they can teach about bullying. I got all of my information through the libraries databases. My main goal is that anybody reading/ listening to it will at least learn one thing.
- One specific choice I made was making it into a powerpoint presentation with a voiceover. With the powerpoint I feel that schools can then use it more in meetings and classrooms than a essay. I decided to do a voiceover because I then gave more information on each slide and elaborated on the information I gave. I tried to make my audience to be everyone, but after feedback I got, I think it leans more towards parents and staff of schools rather than the students. I made these choices because for me I learn better seeing something in short slides rather than reading one long thing.
- I ended up doing everything that I talked about above. I feel that I made a good decision, making it into a presentation and doing a voiceover. I think this was the most important choice of mine because it can appeal to more people because they are just watching and listening rather than reading a 5 page essay. I didn’t really have any ideas that changed from the first draft to the end, I had a list of things I wanted to do and some ideas, then I got feedback and the things they suggested I had thought about, I just hadn't done it yet.
Persuasion Effect Project
Goals and Choices:
- With this piece I am showing the reader two different views, the school and parents about bullying and if schools are doing enough about it. My goal is not to try and persuade someone's opinion but to make them aware of the different sides and views. For my revision I used the Jordan School District’s “Policy Manual” outlining how they take care of students who are bullying. This evaluation adds another point that can change readers minds. The evaluation for the school offers evidence they they have strict policies to be enforced for when bullying happens.
- My goal is to make the readers aware of different perspectives, and solutions. I also gave some brief highlights of policies from Jordan School District in Utah. My writing style is one that gives the information needed for the reader, not changing their opinions. I chose my audience to be those that are concerned with what schools are doing about bullying. Although the audience is pretty much anybody, I think that parents would get the most out of it, with the evaluation that shows that schools in Jordan School District have very specific guidelines.
- I decided to go the way I did because I am the type of reader that likes the information in these types of pieces rather than having someone make my decisions for me. I tend to write the way I like to read. With this piece I also decided on a power point because I like the way they split things up.
Communicating and Collaborating Reflection
I selected Bullying for my semester long social justice issue. I chose it because the topic is one that is near and dear to my heart as I have witnessed it first hand. I have been a victim many times of bullying throughout my life. From the beginning of the Semester my perspective was “schools aren't doing enough to stop it”. This was my perspective because of an experience I had when I was in fourth grade, I was being bullied and my teacher did nothing about it. My perspective changed from “they aren't, to they could do better”. With some of the research I did I found that some schools are and some have policies but they need to enforce them. The one source that really changed my perspective was the Jordan School District's policies I looked at.
I chose specific genres because I like them better or I feel they fit more into my issue, bullying. I chose a memoir because I was writing a story about my fourth grade experience with bully and how it has effected me to this day. I chose to do a profile of a famous person to show that people do/can get over, but it still affects them. Lastly, I chose a Review because I wanted to evaluate a School District close to me and show what they are doing. For two of my assignments I chose to have the medium be a powerpoint, with one having a voice over. I chose this medium for these assignments because I felt like the information I was giving would go well in a powerpoint. I made an infographic for my profile on Sandra Bullock because I wanted it to stand out from the rest of my assignments.
For my revisions I chose my Persuasive Project and my Flash Memoir. I chose revising these pieces because I felt like they were still missing something. For my persuasive project revision I added an evaluation from a District because I felt like it really needed an example of what some schools have in place. For my Flash Memoir revision, I added a little bit more dialogue. I also changed a paragraph that needed work. For my adaption I chose to do my Profile on Sandra Bullock and her experience with bullying. Before I adapted it I had it in a powerpoint, I decided that medium just didn't go well with the information I was offering. I changed it to a infographic, I decided this medium would go really well with what I was saying about Sandra Bullock. I chose these three pieces over my others for the magazine because of the information I was offering. I showed my experience, an actresses and showed two viewpoints of bullying and an evaluation of a School District's policies on bullying.
With the revising and adaption as collaboration, I took into account all of my groups’ suggestions for my piece. I actually decided on the medium for my adaption by seeing my peers’ work and realizing a different medium would go better with my profile. Being the Visual Editor of my group I helped design our magazine. We really worked well together in designing it because we all had ideas on how we wanted it to be. We would talk with each other about our ideas and then we would kind of play around on weebly and find the best design. I feel that our group worked well together, we did have a hard time scheduling meetings because of everyone's different schedules and responsibilities, but we kept in communication 24/7 through google hangouts and chats. Everyone knew their role in the group and we did our “jobs” but what I really liked was that we still each did everything, we all helped each other. Here is our final Magazine.
